# Fire Alarms & Lace Festivals

The adventures this week were a little more spread out than normal. Starting off with a visit to Dumfries House & the beautiful surrounding gardens on Monday. This lovely property was purchased by King Charles (Prince of Wales at the time) back in 2007 as an effort to conserve history, create jobs, & as a place for him to garden. The grounds are filled with beautiful gardens, buildings, bridges, & a playground that I wish I had growing up. The house was filled with wonderful furniture including very expensive Chippendale, a lot of clocks, tapestries, & amazing chandeliers, amongst other things. I got a unique experience, that not many get while touring the house. AS we were finishing up the last room, we got a grand send off with the fire alarms going off. We evacuated & I'm guessing everything was fine because I didn't hear anything after. (photos are not allowed inside the house so sadly I don’t have any to show you)
The playground was suspended up in the trees like ewok homes. There is a rope suspended bridge (with a net on the sides), a crawling rope bridge, seasaws, spinny things, & multiple metal slides. Despite the rain, I did allow my inner child to come out a little by going across the rope suspended bridge & going down one of the metal slides. Even if you aren’t going for the playground, I do suggest making a trip to the grounds.
Adventure number two was a part of the Irvine Valley Lace Festival celebrating 150 years of lace. The event I attended was a pottery painting workshop Thursday where we used lace to make a pattern. This was done by doing a couple base layers of white paint & before the final base coat dries, pressing down the lace onto the surface. We then covered the lace with a couple layers of colored paint. Once allowing it to dry completely, we gently removed the lace revealing the pattern in white.
Friday's mini adventure was going to the Newmilns portion of the lace festival displays. There was so much about the lace industry to be seen here. However, I didn’t have hours to spend reading all the signs so I opted to take photos of a lot of the signs & read about it later. It was also here that I had to exercise great self control; there was lace for sale from MYB Textiles (the mill I got a tour of) & I was extremely tempted to buy a bunch of stuff, but I limited my purchase significantly.
Saturday’s adventure was supposed to be the Isle of Arran, however the ferries thought otherwise. With this being the 4th re-schedule of Arran, I have decided to forgo these travels & plan another trip to Scotland to do it later. Instead I spent the morning walking Kilmarnock in search of a new cafe & luggage. I was successful in finding a cafe but not luggage. I then spent the afternoon shopping in Glasgow with my friends from the local cafe. It was a very fun time, I got to see parts of Glasgow I had not before, & we had some really good Japanese food.
Today, I went to church early to help with the setup since the family that normally handles most of it is on vacation. All things considered it went pretty smooth & we got everything working. After church & lunch, I went on one of my favorite walks in the area, but it is normally too long for me to do on weekdays. I have finished up the day with church & helping with tear down.
